Short answer: Yes, food scanner apps built for autoimmune conditions exist, and the thing that makes one autoimmune-specific is simple. It reads the ingredient list instead of scoring the product, and it reads it against one condition instead of against everyone. For Hashimoto's that means flagging gluten, soy, added sugars of every kind, industrially extracted seed oils, ultra-processed additives, iodine in both directions, and the endocrine disruptors in what you put on your skin, with the reason attached to every flag. What should a food scanner flag if you have Hashimoto's?

Eight things. This is the list Osmi's scanner works from, and every line names the ingredient and the reason in the same breath, because a flag without a reason is just a number with a worse attitude.

  2. Soy. Soy protein isolate, soy lecithin, textured vegetable protein, tofu, edamame, miso. Two separate reasons. Soy isoflavones are the compounds that turn up in every thyroid conversation, and soy also sits on the short list of foods that affect how well your body absorbs thyroid medication.
  3. Added sugar, in every disguise. Cane, coconut, agave, honey, maple, date syrup, juice concentrate, corn syrup, maltodextrin, dextrose. Sugar is sugar. But a whole date isn't a spoon of corn syrup, so the flag says which kind and how processed it is. A scanner that rates granola and soda identically has told you nothing.
  4. Industrially extracted seed oils. Canola, sunflower, safflower, soybean, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed, rice bran, plus the catch-all "vegetable oil". Extracted with heat and solvents, oxidized before they reach you. We wrote a whole piece on what a seed oil scanner should actually catch.
  5. Ultra-processed markers. Emulsifiers, gums, artificial colors, flavor compounds, preservatives that exist because a supply chain needs them rather than because a recipe does. The count of those ingredients on a label is the fastest honest read of how far a food has traveled from the thing as it grows.
  6. Iodine, in both directions. This is the one most scanners get wrong, because the answer isn't "more is better" or "less is better". Kelp, seaweed snacks, iodized salt, certain supplements, some dairy. Iodine matters in both directions, so a blanket "iodine is good for you" verdict is wrong. Osmi names it when it's on the label and leaves the ruling off.
  7. Goitrogens, honestly. Raw cruciferous vegetables, cassava, millet. The internet treats these as a daily emergency. Cooked and in normal amounts, they aren't a concern. Saying that plainly matters more than the flag would.
  8. Endocrine disruptors in personal care. Phthalates, parabens, BPA, PFAS. Not food, and that's the point. They're the reason a thyroid-aware scanner can't stop at the pantry.

Underneath all eight sits one principle: the closer to nature, the better. Degree of industrial processing is the single best proxy we have for whether something belongs in your body, and it's a principle you can reason from in an aisle where the specific ingredient is one you've never seen before.

Worth naming separately, because a scanner can't tell you anything about it: thyroid hormone production runs on iodine, iron and copper, while converting T4 to T3 needs selenium and zinc. That's mechanism, not a shopping instruction. Whether you're low in any of them is a blood test and a conversation. A barcode can't get near it.

Why gluten gets flagged without hedging

Here's where Osmi departs from mainstream advice, and we'd rather say so than let you find out later.

The mainstream position is that gluten matters if you have celiac disease, and that outside of that there's no dietary guidance to give. That second half is literally true. The NIDDK, writing about diet and supplements in Hashimoto's, says research continues but "no specific guidance is currently available". No guideline body has issued one.

What has been documented is the clustering. The NIDDK says you're more likely to develop Hashimoto's if you have other autoimmune disorders, and the first one it lists is celiac disease. They travel together often enough that the association is written down by a US government health institute rather than by a wellness account.

And the interventional evidence, such as it is, points one way. A 2023 meta-analysis looked at gluten-free diets in people with Hashimoto's who had no symptoms or histology of celiac disease. After screening 409 articles it found four studies with a total of 87 patients, averaging about six months gluten-free, and antibody levels came down. They didn't come down far enough to be statistically significant. The paper's own word for it is that the drop nearly reached significance. Eighty-seven people is a small number, and a result that nearly reached significance is a small result. We'd rather hand you both than a confident sentence built on top of them.

So Osmi flags gluten for a Hashimoto's user and shows you what the label lists. That's our position, not a guideline body's. What you do with it is yours. Nobody at Osmi is telling you to cut anything out, and the app never will.

Why one product can deserve two different answers

Iodine is the cleanest example of why a single score for everyone breaks down.

Iodine is essential for making thyroid hormones, and too much of it can push a thyroid in either direction. A 2014 review in Nature Reviews Endocrinology put it plainly: hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism can follow supraphysiologic iodine exposure, either subclinically or overtly, and the risk might be increased in susceptible people, including those with pre-existing thyroid disease. The same review notes the source of the excess often isn't obvious. The NIDDK says the same thing in her words: with Hashimoto's, you may be sensitive to harmful side effects from iodine.

So a kelp snack reads one way for a general shopper and another way entirely for the woman holding the packet. A generic score can't carry that difference. A sentence can.

The same logic runs the other way on goitrogens. Raw kale and cassava get treated online as though they're a hazard, and cooked, in normal amounts, they aren't. A scanner that panics about broccoli while waving through a bar with eleven added sugars in it has its priorities backwards, and you'd be right to stop trusting it.

Does a scanner belong in your makeup bag?

Yes, and almost nothing in this category does it.

The rule we use is blunt: if you wouldn't eat it, it doesn't go on your skin. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are compounds that interfere with hormone action, and thyroid is one of the areas the Endocrine Society named when it reviewed the topics where the translational evidence is strongest. Phthalates, parabens, BPA and PFAS are the classes that put a scanner in your bathroom cabinet.
